BAPS Charities had partnered with the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation and myself to promote and deliver a 10 week programme,  ‘Wellbeing for You’ which encouraged physical activity and a healthy lifestyle for the local community. The aim was to empower them to take ownership of their own health

Shape Up with Spurs

This is a 10-week weight management programme incorporated nutrition workshops and physical activity sessions. The workshops focused on healthy eating, portion sizes, label reading and cooking. Exercise and multi-sports sessions will explain and promote the importance of being active, while there will be on-going support to continue being physically active and managing weight and health risks.

A health convention was organised at BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, London, for senior members of the fellowship.

The event, attended by over 200 people, was in response to growing concerns about health and fitness amongst 40- to 55-year-olds, and provided valuable information and guidance for managing personal health, diet and fitness.

Laura Holland, from the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation, discussed prevention and treatment of sports injuries. The Tottenham Hotspur Foundation has recently begun a partnership with London Mandir and BAPS Charities to improve wellbeing and fitness in the local community. This inspiring initiative began in April 2018, when it was launched in the presence of star Spurs footballer Ben Davies.

An emphasis on diet was an important component of the seminar. Reshma Patel, a Registered dietician, discussed cooking techniques and offered practical tips in relation to the preparation of healthier Gujarati meals.

Both Bupa and the World Heart Federation submitted their perspectives on Hearts at Work and World Heart Day to demonstrate how businesses and NGOs can work effectively in partnership in tackling NCDs. A shocking 59% of people who visited a diabetes roadshow in Harrow were found to be at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

A total of 210 people visited The Diabetes UK Know Your Risk roadshow over the course of two days from April 4, with 123 seen to be at risk and referred to their GP surgery for further tests and support.

Diabetes UK said the figures are cause for grave concern, as 14,919 people are already diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in the borough.

Roz Rosenblatt, Diabetes UK regional head for London, said: “We are very concerned that so many people in Harrow are at risk of Type 2 diabetes.

“This is a serious health condition that, left untreated or poorly managed, can lead to potential devastating complications such as blindness, amputation and stroke.

“Finding out their risk of getting Type 2 diabetes, means the 123 people who attended the roadshow in Harrow are now aware of lifestyle changes they can adopt, such as eating more healthily and taking more exercise to maintain a...
